Radinare Wild Dogs
Zulu and Sam had told me that there was a pack of wild dogs in the neighbourhood - 27 in all - but that they were elusive. On a late afternoon drive we came across a couple of dogs sleeping near a pond. We could hear lions roaring in the distance, but decided to stay with these two in hope of more activity. Slowly more dogs heads appeared in the grass and in the end the whole pack of 27 could be seen. We left them for a while and went to find the lions. On our return the pack were getting active and one could sense that the alpha pair were keen to go hunting - after all, feeding 27 mouths daily is a significant challenge. Everyone was milling about and the youngsters were behaving badly - taking no notice of their elders calls to get active. In the end the leaders set off and the others all gradually trotted off into the bush - but the level of attention and due diligence got steadily worse towards the back of the pack as the younger brethren felt that chasing each other was much more fun than hunting. Being amongst all those dogs was a rare privilege.
